An Example
Let's say you have 4 files that people can download. You want to hide the location of the file on the server. Maybe even want to keep the downloadable file's name a secret.
Download Handler can do that. The downloadable file's location is not revealed. The file being downloaded may be named something different than the original file.
The Download Handler control panel provides copy and paste download link URLs.
The statistics for those four files will let you know more than just how many were downloaded. It also lists the sources of the downloads whenever they are known.
Whenever you have more files to offer, simply add another record to download handler and publish the download link. Download statistics are kept automatically.
To create a download record from the control panel, specify the location of the downloadable file. There are optional fields you can add, such as:
The download link file name may be different than the actual file name on the server. Thus, the actual file name can be your secret.
Tags or key words may be specified for easier searching if you have dozens or hundreds of downloads to track. There is also room for a private note.
A download can be disabled simply by checking a checkbox and saving the change.
Once you create the record for your new download, Download Handler provides the Download Link URL to publish for downloading the file. The actual location of the file on your server is never revealed with Download Handler.
Download Handler also provides a Quick Count Link URL to publish the number of downloads of each item, if you wish. (This feature can be disabled, if you prefer to keep the statistics private.)
Edit the database record at any time from the control panel including the enabling/disabling of downloads.
View the statistics or download them as a CSV file. The control panel makes it easy to choose one, some, or all download records, including a date range for the statistics.
The user manual is built into the control panel, always handy. Each section can be displayed by itself. Or the entire manual can be displayed on one page - useful if you like to print your manuals or keep it open in a separate tab in your browser.
